Paul 'Hammy' Halmshaw founded Peaceville Records in 1987, following several years as a tape trading label. As one time drummer of the Instigators and Sore Throat, and singer of Civilised Society? he has appeared on seven albums and one EP. This early experience served him well in launching his label, which was to become a worldwide success. It spawned the careers of some of the biggest bands in metal, punk and hardcore. Electro Hippies, Doom, Deviated Instinct, Autopsy, Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, Anathema, Darkthrone, Opeth and Katatonia - as is irreverently documented in his memoir 'Peaceville Life'. Amazon Review: This a truly entertaining, candid, and honest account of Hammy's journey in creating a unique and inspirational foundation for emerging bands of many ilks. What is evident from the recollection of times and events in the book, is that Hammy (and partner, Lisa) had a true passion and honest (though often naive) vision for what they were building and supported the bands on the roster at any and every opportunity. The trials and tribulations, alongside the lessons learned from a notoriously savage and frankly backstabbing music industry, are laid forth in detail; so much so that one can only sympathise with a chap following a heartfelt vision often being thwarted by opportunists. It's an insight into a formative and important era in the realm of what one would (at least twenty years ago) deem extreme music. The book charts the discovery, development and successes/downfalls of the bands on the label and of the label itself. For my part, it answered a lot of unknowns and is an invaluable document for those of us interested in the genesis of extreme music, record labels, and the very nature of following one's dreams with the inherent pitfalls encountered along the journey. The book also has many contributions from artists on the label, both past and present, who speak openly and frankly about their experiences, something which certainly adds to the authenticity of the memoirs.
